residence by the ganges
Matra Ashraya – a home and collections museum for the Savara Foundation for the Arts – emerges from a dramatic site in the sacred Himalayan landscape.
The architectural forms assembled on the slopes are oriented upstream towards the rushing waters of the Ganga.
The sculpting of the earth has been orchestrated with deliberation and care. The interplay between architectural form and the majesty of the landscape constitutes the genesis of the design. The sculpture ghats – terraced courts for contemplative viewing of landscape and art – establish a center. Flanked by pools and moss-covered retaining walls, the courts display the sculpture collection. By night, they map the moon in the cascade of reflecting pools.
