“What’s nice about concrete is that it looks unfinished.”
– Zaha Hadid
Designed as a vessel for light, this residence for several generations of an extended family, offers a sanctuary within the density of urban New Delhi. Fragments of foliage orient each room, with views of landscape acting as a filter for privacy. Within the lime plastered interior rooms, the play of light and shadow animates the textured walls. Exposed concrete ceilings serve as a material counterpoint to the floors – stone in the public rooms and timber in the bedrooms. Timber louvers within the rooms create a privacy screen, filtering the sunlight and imparting a warm tonality. The fusion of material and detail strives for a resilient architecture, capable of weathering with grace.
